Insulin plays a very important role in the human body. It’s proper functioning maintain the blood glucose level and prevents us from one of the most spreading disease called Diabetes Mellitus.

Insulin is a hormone in the human body that plays a significant role in the regulation of glucose levels in the blood. Lack of insulin in the body or the inability of the body to respond to the already produced insulin can lead to diabetes. If you have a lot of sugar in your blood, insulin helps to store it in the liver and reduce the associated effects. The stored sugar will be released when your blood sugar levels are low. Therefore, insulin helps to keep blood sugar in check.

Apart from the regulation of blood sugar through the process of producing energy, insulin plays several other main roles in our body.

Insulin and Metabolism Process

This important hormone is made in the pancreas and allows your body to use sugar from the foods consumed to produce energy. You need energy for your daily activities and this is what insulin helps in doing. This is the most important role of insulin in the human body. Through the process of energy production, blood sugar levels are controlled. Insulin stimulates the synthesis of glycogen in the liver to produce energy. However, when the liver is saturated with glycogen, an alternative pathway takes place. This alternative involves the uptake of excess glucose into adipose tissue which leads to the synthesis of lipoproteins.

Insulin and Fat Storage

Insulin is one of the hormones with more than one role in the body. The next work that insulin performs in the body is its influence in the storage of fat. As I said earlier, when insulin is overwhelmed with the glucose levels, it signals fat cells to take up the remaining glucose. The glucose is stored as triglycerides and inhibits the breakdown of fats consequently stimulating the formation of body fat. However, this should notworry you, you cannot add more weight unless you take moreof carbohydrates and fats than your body can burn.

Synthetic Insulin

People who have type 1 diabetes are required to take synthetic insulin-insulin that is not produced in the body. The insulin can either be injected or administered through an insulin pump which will make insulin available in your body day and night. What this means is that insulin plays agreater role in reducing the effects brought about by type 1 diabetes. Synthetic insulin is made in the laboratories but serves the same role as the one produced in your pancreas.

In addition to the above roles, insulin also has some other minor roles that it plays in the human body. It also helps in the modification of the activity of enzymes and the resulting reactions in the body. In case you are injured, insulin also plays a role in the buildup of muscles via the transportation of amino acids to the muscle tissue. Ittransport the exact amount of amino acids that is required in the muscular repairof the damaged areas. It also manages the synthesis of lipids and the excretion of sodium and fluid volume in the urine.
